Beyond Basics is a 501(c)(3) student-centered, literacy nonprofit serving students in Detroit public schools since 2002. They partner with principals and schools to bring students to literacy by providing reading tutoring and supplemental programs – writing, art, mentoring, and partnerships – throughout the school day for students in grades Pre-K through 12. In addition to providing these services, they provide FREE BOOKS to every student and parent that enters their classroom.
The work done by Beyond Basics staff and volunteers has been proven to help school children in economically disadvantaged neighborhoods change their destinies. By significantly raising reading proficiency scores and providing multiple opportunities that cultivate and encourage curiosity, a love of learning, self-expression, character building and professional development, students gain a multitude of tools for success in the future.
